What Are Wings & Arrows?

Your Enneagram type isn’t a fixed box — it’s a dynamic system that moves. Wings and arrows describe how your type shifts and changes depending on whether you’re growing or stressed.

Wings are the two types adjacent to yours on the Enneagram circle. They add flavor and depth to your core type. Arrows show the direction your type moves under growth (integration) and stress (disintegration).

The Puma’s Wisdom: Movement is Natural

The Puma doesn’t stand still — it moves through Kay Pacha with awareness and purpose. Your personality works the same way. Understanding your movement patterns isn’t about fixing something broken; it’s about navigating with clarity instead of stumbling in the dark.

Understanding Your Wings

Every type has two wings — the types on either side of it on the Enneagram circle. While your core type stays the same, one wing usually influences you more strongly. Think of wings as additional colors that shade your primary type.

For example, a Type 4 has a 3-wing and a 5-wing. A 4w3 (Four with a Three wing) tends to be more ambitious, image-conscious, and outwardly expressive. A 4w5 (Four with a Five wing) tends to be more withdrawn, intellectual, and unconventional.

Dominant Wing

The wing that influences you most strongly. This shapes how your core type expresses itself in daily life.

Secondary Wing

Your other wing is still accessible. You may lean into it in certain situations or as you develop.

The Puma’s Dual Nature

Like the Puma who hunts at both dawn and dusk, you have access to both your wings. Neither is wrong — they’re different tools for different moments. The question isn’t which wing is “better,” but which one you naturally reach for.

Growth Arrows (Integration)

When you’re healthy, secure, and growing, you naturally start accessing qualities of another type — your integration point. This isn’t about becoming a different type. It’s about expanding your range and accessing resources you didn’t know you had.

Integration happens when your basic needs are met and you’re no longer operating from fear or compulsion. You relax into growth.

Twos develop emotional depth and acknowledge their own needs.

Threes become more loyal and connected, valuing relationships over achievements.

Sixes become more relaxed and trusting, releasing anxiety.

Stress Arrows (Disintegration)

When stressed, depleted, or when your usual strategies aren’t working, you unconsciously adopt behaviors of another type — your stress point. This isn’t failure. It’s your psyche trying a different approach when the usual one isn’t cutting it.

Recognizing your stress patterns helps you catch yourself earlier. It’s an early warning system, not a character flaw.
