What is the Enneagram?
The Enneagram is a powerful system that describes nine distinct personality types — nine different ways of seeing the world, relating to others, and moving through life. Unlike other personality systems that focus on behavior, the Enneagram goes deeper, revealing the core motivations, fears, and desires that drive everything you do.
The word “Enneagram” comes from the Greek words “ennea” (nine) and “grammos” (something written or drawn). The system has ancient roots, with threads connecting to Sufi wisdom traditions, early Christian mysticism, and modern psychology.
The Puma’s Way: Seeing Clearly
The Puma moves through Kay Pacha — the Middle World — with complete awareness, seeing what others miss. When you understand your core type, you gain that same clarity. You see your patterns, your strengths to embrace, and the traps to avoid. This awareness is the first step toward real growth.
The Nine Types at a Glance
Each type has a core motivation — a deep driving force that shapes how they experience life. As you read through these, notice which descriptions resonate most deeply (not just the ones that sound nice, but the ones that feel uncomfortably accurate).
Ones have a strong inner critic and a deep sense of right and wrong. They strive for improvement in themselves and the world around them, often feeling responsible for fixing what’s broken.
Twos are warm, caring people who genuinely want to help others. They’re attuned to others’ needs, sometimes at the expense of their own, and find meaning through relationships and service.
Threes are ambitious, adaptable, and focused on success. They work hard to achieve goals and often define themselves by their accomplishments and how others perceive them.
Fours have deep emotional lives and a strong sense of identity. They’re drawn to beauty and meaning, often feeling different from others and searching for what’s missing in themselves.
Fives are curious, perceptive, and private. They gather knowledge and observe life from a distance, needing time alone to recharge and process their thoughts before engaging with the world.
Sixes are reliable, hardworking, and vigilant. They anticipate problems before they happen and value loyalty and trust above almost everything else. They can be cautious or rebellious, depending on how they handle their anxiety.
Sevens are spontaneous, versatile, and optimistic. They chase new experiences and possibilities, keeping their options open and their minds racing with exciting plans for the future.
Eights are powerful, decisive, and protective. They move through the world with confidence and intensity, standing up for themselves and others while avoiding any hint of vulnerability or weakness.
Nines are easygoing, accepting, and supportive. They see all sides of every situation and work to maintain harmony, sometimes at the cost of their own priorities and sense of self.
How to Find Your Type
Finding your true type isn’t about matching behaviors — it’s about recognizing your core motivation. Two people might act the same way for completely different reasons. The key is asking: Why do I do what I do?
The Puma Sees in Shadow Too
Your true type often feels uncomfortable to recognize — it reveals patterns you’d rather not see. Like the Puma who hunts at dawn and dusk, seeing clearly in half-light, real self-knowledge means looking at both your light and shadow. If a type description makes you slightly defensive, pay attention — that might be the one.
Consider these questions as you reflect:
• What do you fear most deeply? (Not surface fears, but the thing you’d do almost anything to avoid)
• What do you most want people to see in you?
• What automatic patterns do you fall into when stressed?
• What would feel like the ultimate failure?
Growth and Integration
The Enneagram isn’t just about understanding your type — it’s about growing beyond your automatic patterns. Each type has a path of growth (moving toward health) and a path of stress (moving toward dysfunction).
When healthy, each type expresses the positive qualities of another type. When stressed, each type takes on the negative qualities of a different type. This is called “integration” and “disintegration.”
The Puma’s Gift: Awareness
Like the Puma who sees clearly in both light and shadow, growth begins with awareness. You’ll always be your core type — but you can become a healthier, more balanced version, using your natural gifts while releasing the patterns that hold you back.
The Enneagram in the Three Worlds
In the ancient Andean tradition, there are Three Worlds — and the Enneagram lives in Kay Pacha, the Middle World. This is the Puma’s realm: daily life, walking the earth, how we show up in our relationships and choices. The Puma guides us here with presence and awareness.
But your Enneagram type is just one piece of who you are. In the Upper World (Hanan Pacha), the Condor soars — and your Soul Type reveals your deeper purpose. In the Lower World (Ukhu Pacha), the Serpent transforms — and your Healing Pathway shows how you grow through challenges.
When all three dimensions come together, you discover your Inti Ñan — the deep knowledge of how these parts of you work as one. There are 189 Pathways™, and each carries its own wisdom for growth, relationships, and purpose.
